Clean Slate

As I watched Dark Knight Rises movie in the midst of the action, thrills, and the superhero Batman there was a deeper plot. A young woman who blended in wherever she went. She wore many faces, mixed into any social event, and knew all of the right things to say. She had been groomed her entire life to be the woman that every man desired. Sleek, sensual, seductive, social, diverse, independent, and classy. This all was the outer shell.

Internally, this woman was damaged goods, used, lonely, and searching. She was searching for the means to obtain a clean slate. Her past groomed her into this “I can have whatever I want, by using what I have” mentality. She used her innocent appearance and seductive manipulation to try to fulfill the deep dark corners of her soul. Life to her was a prison cell that had her life record open and exposed to the world by the keystroke of a computer keyboard.

She wanted to be free from past errors, free from the filth of being used for pleasure by numerous men so that her needs and wants could be fulfilled. What was the cost of this so called freedom? Lying, stealing, betrayal, and her soul…her womanhood…her innocence…her dreams…desires…love.

Love was something she never truly knew as it was always manufactured. The false love she knew kept a record of every wrong she had done. It reminded her daily of her past. It always said that “IF YOU do THIS or THAT, then I MAY like you enough to clean your record”.

THE LOVE THAT GOD OFFERS IS AGAPE (UNCONDITIONAL) LOVE. As we read in 1 Corinthians 13:4-8

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

Love never fails.

Love is the complete opposite of everything she was groomed to be, which is why in order for her slate to be cleaned she would have to be renewed. How could this happen?

You may say “nothing can heal her internal scars” but guess what Jesus Christ took on suffering, scars, and deep piercings so that we can be made new creations in Him (2 Corinthians 5:14-19). Because of His death our debts were paid and all of our slates were made clean. When we accept Jesus as our personal Savior we are made blameless, spotless, and clean in His eyes (Ephesians 1:4-8; 1 Thessalonians 3:13).

As we renew our minds in His Word (Romans 12:1-2;Hebrews 4:12-13) and understand that we are fearfully and wonderfully made in God’s image(Psalm 139:13-14) the shame of our past has no choice but to disappear because there is now no condemnation (Romans 8:1).

Today is the day to clean the slate of trying to live up to other people’s expectations (Galatians 1:10). It’ time to live to please our heavenly Father with everything he has placed in these jar of clay (2 Corinthians 4:6-7) we call bodies (Romans 12:1).

Accept Jesus today – Romans 10:9-10
